Top Ten albums of the week

    By Joginder Tuteja, September 1, 2006 - 05:35 IST

    Rank Last week
    - 1 1 KANK
Plus -Though the film has taken a fall after a superb first week, music hasn't really met with the same fate as it still continues to be the preferred choice of the listeners
Minus - SRK should be giving competition to SRK as his 'Don' seems poised to challenge KANK for the #1 spot!

    2 2 Fanaa

Plus - Hasn't everyone who intended to hear 'Fanaa' bought it already? That's what one thinks after looking at the album sales of 'Fanaa' which is still holding fort at #2
Minus - Below average publicity of the music

    3 4 Aap Ki Khatir

Plus - Unexpected happens as 'Aap Ki Khatir' turns out to be the album that has eventually disturbed the Top 3 chart by knocking off 'Gangster'. Himesh Reshammiya des it again!
Minus - While the album has gained from strength to strength, the film hasn't done great. It is ironical that non-success of the film may result in a short stay for AKK at the top of the charts

    4 3 Gangster

Plus - All factors ranging from some genuinely good music, superb publicity, superb word of mouth and a long run of the film have made 'Gangster' a kind of success it actually is today! Such high are its sales that 'Woh Lamhe', which comes from the same team, is finding it hard to challenge the might of 'Gangster' in spite of boasting of superb music itself!
Minus - After plagiarism stories erupted about 'Gangster' with slight murmurs about 'Wo Lamhe', every song by Pritam is being looked at through hawk-eyes!

    5 5 Omkara

Plus - The 'beedi' refuses to die down and has enabled good sales across A, B as well as C centers. Vishal Bhardwaj gets a musical hit under his belt!
Minus - With an exception of a couple of songs, remaining are mainly for classes

    6 6 PKSE

Plus - Pritam's hip-hop, soft and bhangra-pop songs have done well and it now has to hold fort for at least a couple of more weeks before the film arrives on 15th September. It is to the credit of the music that the film has remained in news inspite of a delay by a few weeks
Minus - Mainly targeted at young crowds

7 New Don - The Chase Begins Again

Plus - Shankar Ehsaan Loy knew that they had to come up with an extra ordinary effort to keep their heads high after the release of 'Don'! And don't they do it in style? They have delivered and done so in a great way. The music should be in Top-3 in a matter of a fortnight!
Minus - If only the album would have released as per the original schedule of August 26th, it could have registered very good sales by now. Late release (in some centers the album has arrived only yesterday) means that it would have to contend with #7 position in its opening week

    8 7 Woh Lamhe

Plus - Classy music with some great lyrics and meaning, 'Woh Lamhe' is currently lying low at the bottom of the charts. With only a few weeks to go before the film's release, measures need to be taken for this superb music to reach out to its target audience soon!
Minus - Surprisingly, audience hasn't really gone all out for this superlative album this time around and need of the situation is an extremely strong word of mouth and some new promotional strategy (maybe a promotional video) to give the album a push!

    9 8 Naksha

Plus - Sunny Deol must be happy that Pritam gave him a chartbuster composition (U&I) to dance along. One of those rare action films that finds a place in the charts
Minus - Sunny's image as a macho star and film's title giving an action-adventure feel (rather than a musical) could be the only two reasons cited for the album not breaking into Top-5. The music is peppy and deserves to be reaching out to the youth!

    10 10 Bas Ek Pal

Plus - After 'Aadat', if there is a sad single that has made most impact in recent times, it is 'Tere Bin'. Young composers Mithoon and Viveck Philip create a spellbinding soundtrack that should pick up very well after the film releases on 15th September. Watch out for many more gems from the film to arrive soon
Minus - Not meant for those who are looking at a conventional 'pyaar mohabbat' Bollywood score!

1 Don –plus- The Chase Begins Again Within 10 days of its release, the music of ‘Don’ has zoomed to the top of the charts and is expected to stay at the same position for many more weeks to come. ‘Ye Mera Dil’ has just arrived while ‘Khaike Paan’ hasn’t even knocked yet. One waits for the audience response once that happens because then there is going to be mass hysteria!

Minuses - Just like it happens with the arrival of every big film music album, even ‘Don’ has found its detractors with some accusing Shankar Ehsaan Loy to have mainly remixed the songs from the original ‘Don’! Well, that’s far from true since the album does maintain an entity of its own. If at all there is some threat, it’s from ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ that has just released. It would be an interesting battle at the top between the two as weeks progress!

2 KANK plus- For the first time since its release, KANK moves down from its # 1 spot, though the good part is that this happens only by a solitary position. SEL must have a lot to cheer about since two of their biggest soundtracks are at the top of the charts.

minuses - Karan Johar and SEL have recreated the feel of KHNH in KANK. Nothing wrong with that since the album has been accepted but they could do something different in their next outing since audience may not be as receptive the third time around!

3 1 Bas Ek Pal Just like ‘Don’, even ‘Bas Ek Pal’ takes a mighty jump by 7 places to straightaway move into Top-3. After a rather slow but encouraging start, ‘Bas Ek Pal’ is now a success (at least musically) with Mithoon composed and Atif sung ‘Tere Bin’ rocking the charts all over. One hopes the good luck rubs over the movie too as it releases next week! Not meant for those who are looking at a conventional ‘pyaar mohabbat’ Bollywood score! Also, it may not be a bad idea to start promoting other tracks (some really melodious tracks by Viveck Phillip) too!

4 Omkara In a week of shuffling of number of albums and arrival of many more, ‘Omkara’ actually moves a step up! Now this is something unheard of for music of majority of films that actually show a downwards trend when a film is set to exit the theatres. Jo bikta hai wo achcha hai! The sales of ‘Omkara’ do not really make one cite a weakness any more. The music has proved to be ‘lambi race ka ghoda’!

5 Aap Ki Khatir A couple of really enjoyable tunes by Reshammiya give the music sales of ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ a boost. Dharmesh Darshan’s penchant for popular music is visible yet again though not on the same scale as majority of his earlier musical hits. Inevitable happens as ‘Aap Ki Khatir’ moves down the charts by a couple of positions as the film doesn’t lure many to the theatres.

6 Woh Lamhe In a week when number of albums have moves up, ‘Woh Lamhe’ also shows a jump. As expected, a remix promotional music video of ‘Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai’ is out that has further helped the music register amongst the audience. Just like ‘Gangster’. ‘Woh Lamhe’ too is taking a steady approach from the sales perspective. If the film is a success, the music can further zoom up the charts but if that doesn’t happen, it may be disheartening to see ‘Woh Lamhe’ exiting the charts in a few weeks time.

7 Gangster Back to back with ‘Woh Lamhe’, ‘Gangster’ falls 3 steps down. Nevertheless Pritam has two hits with Vishesh Films now and it would be interesting to see if he truly and firmly becomes a part of the Bhatt camp! After plagiarism stories erupted about ‘Gangster’ with slight murmurs about ‘Woh Lamhe’ as well, every song by Pritam is being looked at with hawk-eyes!

8 Fanaa Jatin Lalit exit the music scene with ‘Fanaa’ that is now showing signs of fatigue. Though good news for their fans is that they would be hearing their music in Shatrughan Sinha’s home production ‘Mera Dil Leke Dekho’. If ‘Fanaa’ being at # 2 for so long wasn’t surprising enough, a bigger surprise was in store this week to see it taking a fall by 6 positions and landing at #8.

9 New Lagey Raho Munnabhai It happened in case of ‘Munnabhai MBBS’ and it has happened again in case of ‘Lahey Raho Munnabhai’. After the songs were seen on the big screen, their popularity has increased hence enabling this Shantanu Moitra album to make a belated entry into the charts. Situational tracks that can be enjoyed most only when being seen rather than heard!

10 New Jaan-e-mann ‘Jaan-E-Mann’ has just released but this is the last instance of it being at this position. Why? Because it is destined to movie further up from now on due to grandeur music by Anu Malik. He makes a terrific comeback and churns out some of the classiest melodies ever composed in contemporary time. The songs have a classy touch that would make it a hot property mainly in the urban centers to begin with. Gradually it has a chance to pick up elsewhere too but that would mainly depend on the promotion and picturisation.
