Shah Rukh Khan at India Today Conclave 2017: Better not to ask people to shut up these days
Shah Rukh Khan was his wittiest best on Day 2 of the India Today Conclave 2017. | Written by Ananya Bhattacharya

Shah Rukh Khan was at his wittiest best on Day 2 of the India Today Conclave 2017. The superstar was supposed to have shared the stage with Amitabh Bachchan, on a session called Unforgettables: The Dream Makers, Lessons from the Spotlight. However, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's father Krishnaraj Rai passed away earlier today, and Amitabh Bachchan wasn't unable to attend the session.

And that landed Shah Rukh alone on the stage... alone, but with moderators Koel Purie Rinchet, Padmaja Joshi and Avantika Singh who made the superstar re-do his Dr Jehangir Khan act from Dear Zindagi.

Shah Rukh Khan had his answers all up his sleeve. Here are some of his precious life lessons:

If you're stepping out, you have to smell good. Brush your teeth, hair should be soft, you should smell very very good. That's the secret you need to follow. My pictures in my car, when I'm coming for a party, are always growling. It is scary. I have a lot of ladies who like me and want to smell me, so I have lady bodyguards now. Women have lovely long nails, and their love hurts, and it is difficult explaining to your kids and wife the nailmarks.

In today's day and age, I'd feign ignorance -- who is this guy (on former Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi) and what religion?! OMG! (on being told that Gaddafi also had female bodyguards.)

Don't worry if you're arrogant, you're very fragile and not very confident about yourself. It is a facade plus a sense of humour... and it gets mistaken for arrogance.

If you're going to be in this profession... There is this being a movie star or becoming a creative person, has this strangeness attached to it. You start doing a thing which works in the eye of people, you love doing it, people's eyes go somewhere else. You shift over, deconstruct yourselves, you get detached from everything else. You don't know yourself. You're so detached. You've done so many things to entertain people that I don't know if I cry like Devdas or Devdas cries like me. The lines blur. Action meant I'm acting. Cameras used to make sound few years ago. The line has got very very blurred. Is it the real me or is it the actor me? I've lost that sensibility.

It doesn't matter. There's no great thing in turning around and saying, 'I know myself'. It's alright. We give such self-importance to ourselves. All of us will keep on, I did this, it's the right thing to do. Why give yourself so much of importance? You're so unimportant that it doesn't matter if you don't know myself. Maybe it's scarier if you get to know yourself.

You can ask people to shut up sometimes or behave badly at the Wankhede Stadium. Nowadays I think it's better not to say Shut Up on social media, you get capital letters - SHUT THE F*** UP, GET OUT OF MY COUNTRY. You can afford a padded room where the sound doesn't go out. Go and shout there, come back happy. I'm being a liar. I'm an actor - I can lie, right?

Keep yourself healthy, a six-pack helps. Play a little football. I don't know... the presence of a little child at the age of 50, just before surrogacy got illegal. It's a good thing. It makes me come alive, see innocence, feel innocence and love in a way it gets jaded. Will I be able to do that for my older kids? That keeps you smoking less, drinking less, exercising more. I'm planning to give up all my vices. I plan to give my child 20 years, 25 years of my life. I'd like to be there to embarrass them at parties, I want to be cumbersome and troublesome to my kids. And that's why, I'm working with younger girls, so that I can feel younger. I can be in touch with the younger me.

Good part about social media is you can put your point across, the bad part is a lot of other people can also put their point across. Now I don't react to it. If you react to it, it's a kind of acknowledgement. I think intelligent people are making a fool of themselves by refuting themselves. You can't spend your life explaining yourself to people. You really need to learn to ignore a lot of things that people say about it. I'm not changing your opinion about me, I have enough platforms now to tell you... you don't need that pat on the back from nameless, faceless people. A lot of people haven't even come to terms with the actuality of being a journalist.

I don't Google myself at all, I find it very strange. Unless I was getting paid by Google, I wouldn't do that.

Dreams need to be unlimited, mad, stupid, they need to go wrong.

I don't focus on anything. Focus is an overused work. We take ourselves away from genuine creativity.
KKhan, phul and mumbiene thank this.
