    Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman (1992)

    Directed by Aziz Mirza

    Cast:

    Shahrukh Khan - Raju
    Juhi Chawla - Renu
    Amrita Singh - Sapna
    Nana Patekar - Jai
    Naveen Nischol - Sapna's father
    Sameer Chitre - Deepak

    Synopsis

Raj Mathur (Shahrukh Khan) is a young engineering graduate from Darjeeling who comes to Bombay with only one ambition - to become a big engineer.
In Bombay, he arrives in a lower middle-class locality in search of a distant relative, only to discover he has left years before. He spends the night at a temple, where he meets a philosophical streetside performer Jai (Nana Patekar), who becomes a close friend and gives him a place to stay in the basti.

With no connections and no experience, he finds it hard to get a job in the city until a beautiful girl from the basti, Renu (Juhi Chawla), finds him a job as a trainee with the construction company where she works as a secretary to Chabbria (Navin Nischol).

Finding that business success comes easily, but true romance might just be a little harder.

I was surprised that, even if this is one of his first films, it's so beautiful. I love this film because i watched it without any expectations and it surprised me for its semplicity and the beautiful love story. I always watch the song when he give her a present, which was a very sexy dress. That song is very sensual

I watched that movie yesterday and yes I like it. It's just a simple movie and for me too superficial, but it's a nice entertaiment. The topics shown in the movie are good, but it's not very detailed and at the end all is too fast. But ok, I can live with it.

Shahrukh acted well and I love the movies from the star of his career. He danced well and looks very desperate in some scenes, I like this characters, when he's a little bit naive and helpless and turns during the movie to a strong person.
I liked Juhi too this time, but can't really say more about her.
The songs are suitale and I think I will hear them more often.

But the character or role I liked most in that movie is this Jai guy. This is an absolutly great part. It's like in a greek drama, the storyteller. But with the difference that he is sometimes part of the story and than out of it. He's a friend and a judge and even the councience for Raju and at the end he rescued him. The times when he tells his audience about the live in Mumbai and what will happen are very good and I have to say I believe him.
And it's not boring that he says what will happen and a second later you see it. He knows everything and is everywhere.

I really liked this movie and although I have watched it for SRK, I have to admit that it was Nana Patekar who touched me - I discovered this actor in this movie and he is fantastic. Without taking any credit away from SRK and Juhi but Nana is the soul of this movie (of course, SRK is the one who makes my heart beat faster every time he comes up on screen  :D ).

RBGG is a very beautiful film - I like it a lot!
As far as I know, it's a kind of remake of the 1955 (?) Film SHREE 420 with Raj Kapoor??!
Shahrukh plays the role of "the little man" very well, actually he's just perfect for it!
Aziz Mirza did a wonderful job, as always. His films with Shahrukh, including Yes Boss, PBDHH and Chalte Chalte all have a very special quality. Very watchable!!

This is one of my favorite movies starring Shahrukh. He was a newcomer and anyone could see the potential he had to really go to the top!

I like how young and innocent he looks. I like the movie's theme about compromising your integrity to become rich and successful. Nana was great in this movie and he did overshadow Shahrukh a bit.

I think the best part of the movie was when the character Sapna came clean and defended Raju in the courtroom and encouraged him to go to Renu. That was pretty 'big' of her considering how she tried to break them up. I can't help but imagine what would become of her considering her father's business was then destroyed.

I must admit the 'Kheti Hai' song and dance number was the best part of the movie too.

I thought... ok, this is an ordinary movie from the 90's, Srk will play nice, bla bla bla bla...Wrong! Only the presence of Srk makes the movie so good. When I thing Srk is a good actor but I see another movie I realize that I'm wrong...he's not just a good actor...HE'S THE BEST!
I like the idea that results from the movie: that the money, the career and the power aren't the most important things in your life. If you don't have love you don't have anything. So what it really matters in life is to make good things and to love.
I liked the love story...simple but very interesting.
When Srk was beaten by those men at the court and hurt him with the knife I was like:scared: I will never forget that scene when he was draging his foot to get to the court to testify.
    In conclusion ... great movie:thumb:

This is such a sweet and beautiful film. Shahrukh and Juhi are both soooo cute. And like Sonal said, the story, it's very simple but still there is just something so special.

I had a really hard time sending back this DVD when I rented it because I liked it so much. My absolutely favorite part is the song Na Na Naa Chona Na.[IMG]

I thought SRK did an excellent acting job in the film and I enjoyed the plot with the character changes they had him go through. Right from this very early film of his anyone can see how special and unique a screen presence he had (and still does)

K I love you Shah Rukh. Staff Member

OMG I love this movie soo much too!! Another one of my first Shah Rukh films that reminds me of when it all started...:eek:

As everyone else mentioned, the beauty of this film lies in its simplicity. I especially love the way they treated Shah Rukh and Juhi's relationship. There was so much innocence. The way she looks at him shyly from the balcony and blows a kiss, the way he catches it and puts it inside his shirt.:heart::heart: Or the scene when he tries to kiss her in the car...that was sooo cute!! I loved the awkwardness and innocence of the scene...the way Juhi was uncomfortable that the car dealer was trying to look through the window, the way Shah Rukh smiles and tells her, "Tum kitni achchi lag rahi ho, kiss karoon? (You're looking so nice. Can I kiss you?)" What I loved most was how he says with this childlike excitement, "Aisa mauka Bumbai mein baar baar kahaan aata hai? (How often does one get such an opportunity in Bombay)?" showing that he really wanted to kiss her, yet when he leaned closer, he moved his lips towards her so gently, not trying to force himself upon her in any way, it was so beautiful.

I also love the part before that when they're sitting together eating channe (another cute part) and Juhi is telling Shah Rukh to save his money. All these small aspects portray the progression of their relationship extremely well.

Another favorite part was when Juhi tells Shah Rukh she'll feel shy in the gold dress and he says why, "Main aankhen band kar loonga. (I'll close my eyes.)" It was so cute because he wanted to see her in the dress but still said it so sweetly.:p

I think one of the things I loved most about Raju was his respect for women. The way he treated Juhi so gently, even when he kissed her it was so respectful. And the way when Amrita came down in her off the shoulder dress he said, "Log tumhe dekhenge, mujhe achcha nahin lagega. (People will look at you, I won't feel good about that.)" Of course I didn't know the first time around, but now when I watch that scene, it reminds me so much of the real Shah Rukh.:heart:

What I also loved was the way the whole neighborhood came together and really cared when the two workers died. I think that's one of the reasons I liked this movie so much. In every relationship there was so much simplicity and that is something that I really value, and feel is highly lacking in today's world.

And in regards to films, today's porn stars who call themselves actors need to learn from Shah Rukh what loving a woman is really about. Reminds me of his quote, "If I need to kiss to portray romance than I'm not the actor I think I am."

Of course, I could go on about many scenes, so I'll stop here.:p:eek:

Prerna Dewan, Jasmine and rubyroo thank this.
