SRK's Ra.One sets new record at Box Office in first week

    Friday, November 4, 2011, 19:20 [IST]

Superstar Shahrukh Khan's much-hyped movie Ra.One has created several records in the history of Hindi film industry. The latest record coming its way is its first week's collection. The superhero movie has scored whopping amount of Rs. 192 crores at the Box Office in the opening week beating the record of Salman Khan's Bodyguard, which had grossed more than Rs. 125 crores.

Ra.One received a grand opening in both multiplexes and single screens across the globe. The movie grossed Rs. 170 crore at the Box Office in the extended first weekend. But its collection slowed down on week days. It collected Rs. 17 crore on Sunday and it dived to 6.5 crore on Monday. It fell down even further to Rs. 4 crore on Wednesday.

However, the film Ra.One, which has been made with a whopping budget of Rs. 150 crore, is running in profit with it first weeks earning crossing Rs. 192 crores. Now, it should be seen whether Shahrukh-Kareena starrer science fiction flick will be able to break the record of Bodyguard (Rs. 253 crores) and 3 Idiots (Rs. 375 crore) in its long run or not.

Ra.One Scores Big In Week One, New Releases Dull
    Saturday 5th November 2011 09.00 IST

Ra.One (Hindi) had a good 9 day first week of around 98.50 crore nett although it did fall badly from Wednesday but the huge extended weekend total of 80 crore nett plus enabled it to score at the box office. The film has not matched the huge pre-release blockbuster expectations that many had from the film but still has done well due to the initial. The lifetime distributor share is looking to be 65 crore approx and will be amongst top five of all time. The regional versions did average business of around 6 crore nett. HIT

Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One Recovers Cost In Week 1; Week 2 Starts Weak

Ra.One, easily the most publicised film of recent times, did not live up to the crazy hype generated for it. Although it has collected impressively in the first 9-day week, the grand collections are a result of the 5-day weekend after which collections dropped pretty fast. The first week ended at around Rs. 100 crore (all-India net collection). If the dubbed Tamil and dubbed Telugu versions are also taken into account, the net all-India collection figure is approximately Rs. 108-110 crore. It’s the same story in the Overseas circuit where also the drop was alarming after the weekend. In the Overseas territory, the film collected an equivalent of Rs. 37 crore during the 9-day week.

    Ra.One: Outlook For 2nd Week
The second week started on dull collections. Although it is a long weekend (Bakr Eid holiday on Monday, November 7), the revenues may not be enviable due to a sizeable section of the audience not approving of the film and, thereby, contributing to negative mouth publicity.

    Ra.One: Economics
Nevertheless, the high-budgeted film has recovered its entire cost at the end of week 1 after taking into account the first week’s India and Overseas theatrical shares (Rs. 70 crore), revenues from satellite, audio and other ancillary rights (Rs. 40 crore) and subsidy receivable from the UK government (Rs. 28 crore). What comes in now from Indian and Overseas theatres would go towards commission for the film. Exhibitors of small centres would lose part of their MGs (minimum guarantees) and FHs (fixed hires).

Ra. One netted around 2.5o crore yesterday (Friday). The Hindi version crossed the 100 crore nett mark aswell yesterday, which is an achievement, if not as exlucisve as it was a few years ago. The numbers and drops are damning, on its first Friday it did around 15.5/16 cr nett, thats is a drop of more than 80%, which in trade analyst terms represents total rejection, the film is surviving on SRK's sheer star power and some of the collections are higher then what they would be thanks to the 3D version. I don't think I need to tell even the ardent of SRK fans that this is a big dissapointment, I myself estimated a 160-170 crore nett and expected Ra. One to be the second highest grossing film of Indian cinema. However in the coming days Ra. One has a few more regional holidays, and its biggest test now will be to see if it can cross the lifetime collections of Ready (around 125 cr nett). Bodyguard, Dabangg and 3 Idiots are out of the picture. Ra. One has a chance (albeit a small one) to end up as the 4th highest grossing film of Indian cinema.

Had SRK got a director like Rajkumar Hirani or Aditya Chopra even (both extremely good directors), he would have been challenging the nett collections of 3 Idiots such was the curiousity for the film and the promotional drive. Where Ra. One went wrong was in its storytelling, it had a story to tell but that story was told extremely poorly, the blame has to go to the director for this. Its commonly said in the trade that a "star will get you the opening, the director is the one who will keep you in the chair", Ra. One got the opening but it failed to keep people into watching it.

A few of the questions that I have been asked regarding Ra. One box office collections by consumers.

    Q. So why did Ra. One box fail at the box office

It didn't, it did however fail to live upto expectations set by the trade, there are many reasons for this....negative word-of-mouth, poor direction and over-hype.

    Q. Was Ra. Ones promotional drive appropiate for the film?

Yes and No. Yes because the film had a huge budget, it needed to recover big costs and therefore the film needed to be promoted to a wide audience. Some of the promotional activity was new and commendable, the first look on new years day in a nationwide newspaper, the idea of tying up with McDonalds, the F1 promotion and the collectible figures etc where novel and something SRK and his promotional team should be commended for, it was required for a film like this and even the hardcore analysts knew where SRK was coming from when he started promoting the film so early to try and establish an emotional connect between G. One and the audience. However where the promotional drive stuttered was this idea of "the next level", the tagline was everywhere but on whose say so was it? surely the audience decides if the film is great and not the filmmakers. These three words made the audience believe they where going to be viewing the next Avatar, when it wasn't, the promotional team overhyped the film by promising more then what they where actually offering, this left viewers dissapointed and hence negative w-o-m.

    Q. Where does this leave SRK in terms of the pecking order for commercial actors in Bollywood?
Well stars give you an opening, and Ra. Ones opening records where competing with the best it even set the record for the biggest day in Box office history, so SRK still has it like the other two Khans even in the mid-40s and is very much in the top bracket. In fact the the film is surviving thanks to only his star power. Ra. One shouldn't affect SRK BO wise, he has the strongest record at the BO out of all other commercial actors barring Aamir Khan. However it will affect his credibility, remember he was the one selling the film, not Anubhav Sinha, the audience ire will be directed at him. It will be interesting to see what effect Ra. One will have on Don 2.

Being honest ra.one has performed under expectations but you reckon don 2 can crack the 200 crore mark since its got srk to get the opening and farhan akhtar as a credible director?

  8. sami16

    sami16 a fan not a fanboy

My honest answer to this is no. I doubt Don 2 will put up record opening numbers not because it doesn't have the potential but because it is releasing on a normal 3 day weekend weekend in India (December 23rd is a Friday). As far as overseas....Don 2 will be more overseas friendly obviously, definitely potential for some record numbers.

Don 2 no doubt it will carry similar hype to Ra. One/Bodyguard etc....thats the whole point....3 Idiots is the only film to go past 200 crore because it told a story very well, in between all the crap e.g that horrible baby scene there, was actually a very good story that was well told. In my opinion Farhan Akhtar knows more about film-making in his little finger than Anubhav Sinha knows in whose whole body. In fact every film Farhan Akhtar has been associated with in more than just the capacity of a producer has been received well critically and either been a hit at the BO or garnered a cult following post-release..(Dil Chata Hai, Lakshya, Positive, Zindagi na Milegi Dobara, Rock On, Luck By Chance, Honeymoon Travels). Don is considered to be his weakest film however, but expect Don 2 to have a story that is told well, FA will give you that much, but on the basis of the first Don I don't see Don 2 crossing 200 crore, it will need to have great trending at the box office and very positive word of mouth to do it, similar to 3 Idiots. In my opinion the Don films (the original, the remake and now this one) are an acquired taste, not everyone is into hollywood style action which is the USP of Don. Also, remember Don 2 is a sequel, it already has a fanbase (plus point) but also people who did not like the first Don won't turn up for this however convincing the promos are.
A rough (very rough) estimate if Don 2 is liked and trends well would be something around 160-170 crore nett (same as initial estimate for Ra. One, "Reliance Big" will give it a huge release and again its a festive release plus a 3d/tamil/telugu version), as far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that Don 2 will outgross Ra. One, but we will see how much Ra. One will effect it.

Ra.One Has Good Jump On Saturday
    Sunday 6th November 2011 15.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Ra.One had a good jump on Saturday as collections were around 3.25 crore nett as against 2.25 crore nett on Friday. The two day total for second weeeknd is 5.50 crore nett and at least another 4 crore nett should come on Sunday.

Sunday can be very good as because Monday is a holiday the late shows on Sunday in big cities are unlikely to show a drop like normal Sundays.Multiplex centres saw huge jumps with some theatres even doubling the Friday collections.

Ra.One can still come with a 15 crore nett plus total in week two despite the film only being accepted mainly by teenagers and kids in big urban centres like Mumbai and Bangalore.

Ra.One Makes Rs. 10 Cr Over 2nd Weekend

    Shah Rukh Khan In Ra.One
Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra.One made Rs. 10 crore (approx all-India net collection) over its second weekend at the box-office. The film, which had earlier broken the first weekend box-office record of Bodyguard, failed to bring in many audiences in the period from Friday, November 4 to Sunday, November 6, 2011.
On Friday, Ra.One netted Rs. 2 crore. The Saturday and Sunday collections were only slightly better at Rs. 3 crore and Rs. 4 crore respectively. Add to this another 1 crore (approx) for the collections from the dubbed Tamil and dubbed Telugu versions of the film.

It is really disappointing to know that Ra.One has not done well at all. It might have recovered its costs of the Television & satellite rights, music rights and other pre-licensing content. On its own at the box office it has underperformed. Moreover there is no clear cut picture on how much it has actually made so far both gross and net. Can someone come out with actual figures please.

Obviously the film has done well. It's just that the expectations were so skyhigh, it didn't meet them. That however does not mean a bad performance.. It has done well, they made the money back and there are plenty of people who liked it, even if not everyone did..

    Ra.One Has Good Second Monday
    Tuesday 8th November 2011 18.00 IST
    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Ra.One had a good second Monday thanks to the Eid holiday as it collected around 2.50 crore nett taking the four day weekend to around 12 crore nett approx.

The collections on the second Monday thanks to Eid are actually the third highest of the year after Ready and Singham. Ready which is the most appreciated film of 2011 collected a huge 3.75 crore nett on its second Monday and Singham collected around 2.75 crore nett while Bodyguard and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara collected 2.25 crore nett each. Basically the holiday means Ra.One collections are double of what they would have been if it had been a normal Monday.

Ra.One will add around 15 crore nett in its second week. The film has been helped hugely with a favourable release date in terms of an extended opening weekend and many holidays in its run.

It is due to the favourable release timing that the film will register a 65 crore distributor in the domestic market which is fourth highest of all time.
