Pakistan’s Mahira Khan with Shah Rukh Khan in Raees
    Meena Iyer,TNN | Dec 16, 2014, 12.00 AM IST

    Mahira Khan
Talent from across the border continues to be sought after in Bollywood. After Fawad Khan (Khoobsurat) and Humaima Malick (Raja Natwarlal), yet another attractive Pakistani actress, Mahira Khan is slated to make her debut in Hindi cinema. This Pak import won notices worldwide for her performance in Shoaib Mansoor's 'Bol' (2011), just like Humaima did.

She visited Mumbai last month after her television serial Humsafar gained popularity and dropped subtle hints of the Hindi filmmakers whom she may consider working with. Obviously, the ones who were the quickest to move in were producers Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, who finalised the VJ-turned-actress for 'Raees' being directed by Rahul Dholakia. The film has Shah Rukh Khan playing a don and is likely to have Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing a cop. A source said that SRK had dropped in at the audition to meet Mahira.

The actress is married to her college sweetheart Ali Askari. And though she is based out of Karachi, the articulate girl with the porcelain complexion travels extensively. India will be a long haul destination for now, we guess.

She's 31, turning 32 in 5 days. Raees is a serious film so obviously there won't be any 'lovey dovey' stuff and we can't be sure she'll be romancing SRK in the film.

The last time he was paired opposite a 20 year old was in RNBDJ. MNIK had Kajol and Ra.one and Don 2 hardly had any love angle so the age of the actress was irrelevant. He did romance Katrina (JTHJ) and Deepika (CE, HNY) who are 18-20 years younger recently but he played a much younger character in JTHJ and him and Deepika made for a good pair. Sure the actresses in CE or JTHJ could have been more closer to his age but it's not a big deal.

    wonderful! thank you Karan :)
oh and i am not really complaining about her age if she is a great actress ;) but to be really honest, I don't really care about the actress, the main thing SRK is in the film, so whoever the leading lady I'm fine with it :D
plus I'm excited because Rahul Dholakia seem to be a director known for serious films. Finally we'll see some serious cinema from Shahrukh, after some time

Revealed: Why Mahira Khan was selected as the leading lady opposite Shah Rukh Khan in 'Raees'
    Tuesday, 16 December 2014 - 8:23pm IST | Agency: dna webdesk
Pakistani actress Mahira Khan is the latest one to enter the Bollywood bandwagon and what better than having a grand debut opposite the Badshah himself, Shah Rukh Khan. Yes, Mahira Khan is going to romance SRK in his upcoming Rahul Dholakia project titled Raees.

While names like Sonam Kapoor and even Kriti Sanon were doing the rounds, it came as a pleasant surprise that the producers narrowed in on Mahira as the heroine for their film. Also, many would have expected a big heroine like a Katrina Kaif or a Deepika Padukone to be cast alongside SRK but now that Mahira has come out as the chosen one, director Rahul Dholakia has clearly explained why Mahira won the race against other popular Bolly heroines.

Raees is set in the 1980s and revolves around the story of a Gujarati bootlegger, played by Shah Rukh and Mahira will essay the role of his wife in the film. It is said to be a screen adaptation of a famous Gujarati don and Nawazuddin Siddiqui would play the role of a top cop.

In this cat and mouse chase, Mahira will fit in beautifully into her character, affirms the director. Ask him why and he explains. The director said that Raees is set in a Muslim ghetto of Gujarat and Mahira's character in the film always needed to possess a certain look. Mahira, who carries that aura seemed perfect for the role.

And given that Mahira is already famous in her nation, that would act as an added bonus. The film is set to go on floors in February 2015 and the shooting will tentatively be complete by June 2015.

I'd have to excel like Mahira, Nawaz: SRK on 'Raees'
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who will star with Pakistani actress Mahira Khan and acclaimed Indian actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the forthcoming film "Raees", is all praise for them, and says now he would have to pull up his socks to perform as well as the duo.

"Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mahira Khan are there in the film (Raees). Both of them are very accomplished actors. I think the cast is really wonderful," Shah Rukh said here Monday at the launch of Dabboo Ratnani's annual calendar.

"Now I would have to excel and perform like them,", added the actor, who is set to join the film's shoot by March end.

Mahira, who became popular in India with her successful TV show "Humsafar", will be seen as Shah Rukh's leading lady in "Raees".

Shah Rukh has already met Mahira and seen her television work. He is quite impressed with her talent.

"Rahul (Dholakia) liked her. She suited the film a lot. I have seen a little bit part of her television stuff. I have met her and she is marvellous actor," the 49-year-old said.

To be directed by Dholakia, "Raees" is being co-produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani.

    A ‘raees’ entry into Bollywood
In the much-awaited film, Mahira will play the wife of a gangster (Shah Rukh). PHOTO : NEFER SEHGAL/EXPRESS TRIBUNE

Actor Mahira Khan is on the road to ascending the acting throne as she gears up to share screen space with superstar Shah Rukh Khan in the upcoming film Raees. What will be the grandest entry of a Pakistani actor into Bollywood, so far, has created viral frenzy across the globe.

From earning her spurs for her performance opposite the newest Khan in B-town, Fawad Khan, in the television drama Humsafar, to starring next to the undisputed king Khan, Mahira has become an acting sensation on both sides of the border.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the film, which will see Mahira playing the wife of a gangster (Shah Rukh), will also feature critically-acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a cop. In an interview with The Express Tribune, Mahira talks about how she bagged the role, which could become a stepping stone for her career in Bollywood and beyond.

How long did you wait for a script, such as Raees, to come your way? Did you refuse to do any Bollywood films in the mean time?

I was neither waiting for a perfect script from Bollywood nor had I read many. I got a call for an audition and wasn’t told the exact details of the film, except the names of the producers and the director (Rahul Dholakia), both of whom I liked. Once I read the scenes, I found them to be interesting and went ahead and auditioned for the role.

Media reports suggest that Shah Rukh showed up at your audition for Raees. If this is true, tell us about what the audition process was like. Were you confident that you would get selected for the role?

I just did what I had to: learnt my lines and gave it my best shot. I was nervous before the audition and thought I’d forget all my lines. I did meet Shah Rukh. He was very kind.

Shah Rukh plays a Muslim character in the film and you come from a Muslim family from Pakistan, where Urdu diction holds significance. Do you think this played in your favour?

I’m not sure if it played in my favour, but I hope that it does. The character is that of a Gujarati Muslim, so the diction and accent will be Gujarati.

Do you feel any pressure debuting opposite notable actors, such as Shah Rukh Khan and Nawazuddin, in a Farhan Akhtar production?

Well, yes. There is always a bit of pressure when performing with such good actors. I’m a fan of both Shah Rukh and Nawaz. Luckily, I’ve had the chance to perform with some of the best actors in Pakistan, who helped me out a lot on set. I also learnt a lot from them and hope for the same with Shah Rukh and Nawazuddin. Insha’Allah.

What edge do you think Pakistani actors have over Indian actors?

None. Only a good actor has an edge over a weak actor. A hardworking actor has an edge over a lazy actor. Nationality has nothing to do with it.

You worked in TV for a while after acting in the film Bol. How hard do you think will it be for you to re-transition into film from TV?

I have worked on a film Bin Roye and am currently shooting for another film directed by Asim Raza. So, the transition has been made already. What I’m nervous about is working in an environment where I don’t really know anybody. Everything will be new for me except for the camera, I guess.

A challenge starring opposite Shah Rukh is that it is difficult for any actor to outshine him due to his star power. What are your thoughts on that?

I don’t worry about such things. If my co-actor shines, it means I have shone as well and vice versa. These are not the kind of thoughts I focus on. I read a script, meet my director and go with my instinct.

All Mahira Khan needs is a little bit of luck
    By Hassan Choudary
    Published: January 19, 2015
Mahira Khan is set to appear alongside Shah Rukh Khan in Raees.

KARACHI: The shooting for Raees, which will star Mahira Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, is scheduled to begin sometime in March this year but let’s get one thing straight: Mahira Khan has already achieved what no other Pakistani artist aspiring to work in Bollywood ever has.

Over the years, many Pakistani actors have ventured into Bollywood. From the iconic Lollywood couple Mohammad Ali and Zeba to the veteran Talat Hussain, the ravishing Zeba Bakhtiar to cricketer-turned-actor Mohsin Hassan Khan and more recently, Moammar Rana, Meera, Humayun Saeed, Sana, Veena Malik, Sara Loren, Ali Zafar, Humaima Malick, Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas. Not to forget, Salman Shahid, Abid Ali and Javed Sheikh for their portrayal of important characters in quite a few films. Mikaal Zulfiqar and Rasheed Naz also have central roles in Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Baby.

So, what is unique about Mahira’s Bollywood debut? To begin with, Mahira is debuting in a film with Shah Rukh Khan. Aside from the fact that Shah Rukh is the undisputed king of Bollywood and a global icon, what this means is that there are certain predictions we can make about Raees’ box office collections with a considerable amount of certainty. And in a day and age where films are categorised not as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but as ‘200-crore’ (INR2 billion) and now, thanks to PK, ‘300-crore’ (INR3 billion) films, box office collections are all you need to prove your mettle.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Humaima Malick seems to have disappeared after her film Raja Natwarlal’s disastrous run at the box office. The lifetime box office collection of her film, starring Emraan Hashmi, which received only negative reviews, stands at around INR270 million. Ali Zafar’s much-hyped Kill Dil, co-starring Govinda, Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra, received mixed reviews and made just slightly more – INR320 million.

To keep matters simple, let’s stick to the money these films made at the Indian box office only. Imran Abbas’ debut film with Bipasha Basu also received negative reviews and made around INR200 million. Fawad Khan’s Khoobsurat, starring Sonam Kapoor, was a hit. But in spite of the mostly positive reviews, the film was able to make barely INR250 million.

Mahira’s co-star Shah Rukh Khan’s last film Happy New Year received mixed reviews and made INR450 million – on it’s opening day. The thing with Shah Rukh is that his movies only get either mixed reviews or good reviews. There are no bad reviews. Before Happy New Year, he appeared in Chennai Express, which received mostly positive reviews. Chennai Express‘ lifetime collection is around INR2.3 billion.

That’s the kind of pull Shah Rukh has at the box office. Compare the first day collections of any of his movies with Bollywood films starring Pakistani actors or actresses and you will find his films make more money on the first day compared to the lifetime collection of movies starring Pakistani artists. Happy New Year’s total collection stands at INR2.03 billion.

Add to that Shah Rukh Khan’s international appeal. His fans are scattered around the world — from Germany to Morocco, Indonesia to Peru — giving his co-stars the unique opportunity to reach out to a truly global audience.

So, one thing is for certain: Mahira’s debut film will make more money than any other Pakistani artist’s Bollywood film ever has. And that her film will get a big international release. But to say Mahira’s fate is sealed only because her co-star happens to be one of the biggest superstars in the world is doing injustice to the supremely-talented actress. After all, she isn’t the first Pakistani artist to work with Shah Rukh. Javed Sheikh played Shah Rukh’s father in Om Shanti Om, which probably helped him secure a role as Salman Khan’s father in Yuvvraaj the next year. But despite his appearances in such big films, Sheikh was unable to firmly establish his place in the Hindi film industry.

Mahira is no ordinary Pakistani artist making a run-of-the-mill Bollywood debut. She is a superstar who has already found a place in the hearts of the Indian audience thanks to Humsafar’s special telecast in India. And if Fawad Khan’s Bollywood debut is any indication, we can predict with utmost certainty that a large number of people in Pakistan as well as India simply cannot wait to watch her on the big screen again.

The film itself is being produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, who have given hits like Dil Chahta Hai, the remake of Don, Rock On!!, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Talaash and more.

The world’s most popular actor as her co-star, brilliant producers, a strong fanbase in Pakistan as well as India and loads of talent — all of Mahira’s predecessors who ventured into Bollywood had either one or two of these things. She has them all. In fact, she has more. Recently when asked what edge Pakistani actors have over their Indian contemporaries Mahira replied, “None. Only a good actor has an edge over a weak actor. A hardworking actor has an edge over a lazy actor. Nationality has nothing to do with it.” Proving further, she has the right attitude as well.

All she needs is a tiny bit of luck.
