    No more larger than life
    DC | Reena Kapoor | November 09, 2014,
    Shah Rukh Khan
After the back-to-back successes of Chennai Express and Happy New Year, Shah Rukh Khan’s brand value has increased and how! But now the actor is tired of doing larger-than-life cinema. Currently, SRK is committed to two more big-ticket films, Raees and Fan. The over-worked superstar has taken a few days off before starting on these projects. Eager to do something different, he has expressed a desire to do a film on a smaller scale.

“I’m tired of doing larger than life films. It takes a toll physically and emotionally. I’m looking for an interesting small budget and small set up film. Yes, I’m meeting a lot of debutant writers and directors. I want to do a film that has an intense story and not too much glitz and glamour,” says Shah Rukh.

He admits that he has been thinking about it since quite some time now. “The impact of a realistic and non-commercial film like Chak De does strike a chord with the audience. A simple film with a strong message and without too much commercialisation is what I’d want to do,” says SRK.

But can a film with his name attached to it ever be “small budget”? “As an actor, I’ve always believed that a script is what makes a film larger than life. An actor’s name might boost the commercial viability. At the end of the day, a mediocre film will go unnoticed and a good film will be applauded, irrespective of the big names associated with it,” he says.

In the past, Shah Rukh’s attempt to underplay his superstar image has worked for him in films such as Chak De and Swades.

I'm so happy to see Him thinking these thoughts. Really hope he finds such a project.
nika, rubyroo and tasifa thank this.

tasifa which means Blue Eyes in Thai.

Hopefully he will. I can't believe that there is no author who can't write a good original script with Shahrukh in mind. He's such an inspiration!

I hope it's not another sports bio. "Chak De" was wonderful, but a lot of people have been there/ done that. Why not brains over brawn? How about a bio of a writer who wins international literary awards, a martyred political reformer like "Shahid" (National Award 2014), or a great Indian scientist or doctor like one of the five who have won the Nobel Prize. India's smart professionals are some of the toppers world wide. Their story could be told in a way that entertains as well as making India proud.
    rubyroo and tasifa thank this.

or something totally original that would make people go ''Wow that's brilliant.

According to Shahrukh, they are different from his last two projects, yes. I hope he does films that he wants to do whatever the genre. I love Shahrukh, not a particular character. Personnaly the man could read the phone book or the dictionary for 3 hours that I would marvel at it.
rubyroo, Mara and Dea thank this.

    Wafa I want my Mom!!!

wasn't there some talk about SRK might be in another Munnabhai a couple of years ago? what happened to that? I would love to see him in such role.

truth is directors that get to catch his attention always use him for commercial films. it's like why not go over the top if u get this, maybe, once in a lifetime opportunity to do a film with Shahrukh that would automatically be a hit, if it's commercial it will automatically also bring tons of $$$. that's the sad truth abt how directors think. and they keep their original, risky scripts for other actors they can gamble with.
i mean let's take Dil Se. what a brilliant film it was but it didn't do great at the BO. had it been done now rest assured it would have been a blockbuster cuz it has all it needs. only difference is that Shahrukh is a much much bigger name now than back then.
i really hope someone would stop being so selfish and cast Shahrukh in a film that would really satisfy our sweetheart's craving, to challenge himself truly. i can't wait for Raees and Fan, though the latter i think is somehwere in the middle but we'll have to wait and see.
Arpan Srk and Mara thank this.

I don't think so. It's down to what films SRK chooses to do and the fact that he likes working with his friends also plays a part in what films he does. He wanted to do larger-than-life commercial films so he did CE & HNY. Then he wanted to do more offbeat & performance oriented films that challenge him as an actor so he's doing Fan & Raees. In the same way he did Dil se, Asoka, Swades, Paheli, Chak De India & MNIK over the years that were offbeat films.

SRK was also the first choice for films like lagaan, munna bhai, rang de basanti, jodha akbar, 3 idiots & Jolly LLB etc that he didn't do for one reason or another. So you can't say that directors only offer him commercial films.

    "Just my opinion"
Since no one knows exactly what Fan & Raees is about, I not sure how we can think they won't be big commercial films. Shah Rukh said he had never done a film like R. Shetty's either and it was certainly on a very large scale. So him saying it is a different kind of film to me doesn't mean it's not large scale. If this article is to be believed he says he hopes to do something smaller after these 2 films....hence they sound like they also are large commercial films too.....that's if this article is even true..... I thought he was doing another Shetty film after these two....in my opinion what a waste of talent.

He is such a wonderful actor, so much more than acting goofy and showing his muscles...those movies are for other "actors" who can do no more than that.

Shah Rukh has a real gift in telling a heart felt story, hope he gets back to using it soon.

Raees and Fan are definitely not commercial films, they're content and performance oriented films. "Shah Rukh said that his forthcoming releases YRF’s ‘Fan‘ and Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Raees’ fall in the category of off-beat cinema and he is happy to be a part of them." http://indianexpress.com/article/en...r-in-will-become-bigger/#sthash.ehoZndGh.dpuf

He's said that after fun films like CE and HNY he wanted to more serious films (fan & raees): "For the last year I've been doing a lot of fun films including HNY so I'm wanting to now tap into the inner intellectual bad-boy, serious actor for a few months." http://www.ndtv.com/video/player/news/a-happy-new-year-for-shah-rukh-khan/304284?hp&video-featured

"After I was halfway through Happy New Year, I was sick of the film… the larger-than-life aura, the swagger, picking up Deepika in my arms, kung fu fighting and all that stuff…. And I said, ‘I want to be alone in a room and I want to just act’. And now I am doing Fan" http://www.abplive.in/movies/2014/1...th-my-youngest-one-in-a-nice-way#.VGG8gvnF-YJ

Raees deals with issues like the illegal smuggling of Alcohol in Gujarat. You can read more about it here: http://www.rahuldholakia.com/News/PDF/mumbaimirror.pdf

In regards to Fan, SRK's said it's an intense yet commercially viable film.

More info on his next three films (fan, raees and rohit shetty's next) where he says fan & raees are more realistic as opposed to the larger-than-life CE & HNY:

“For an actor, it’s not different yaar. I don’t choose films for the sake of it, I choose because of what state of mind I am in. I have done two big films –Chennai and Happy New Year. Big means everything is larger than life and the scale is big. So I just wanted to be in a more realistic actor’s phase. I liked the story of Fan and it’s not like what has been mentioned on Twitter. I have never seen life from a point of someone who likes me. It would be very interesting for me to be on the other side. To be a fan, what does it mean felt like a good idea and it’s diametrically opposite to who I am so it would be very interesting. Raees is more of an earthy role and I am a very urban actor. So I found that interesting. As for Rohit’s film, it will be in his genre – that is bigger and better. I want to make a big film with him because I like the vision he has and I think he is fantastic. He is hard working like I am, he has got mad sense of humour and he has a sensibility that I like. He is also very funny on the sets and his unit is funny too.”

I guess we'll see - it's impossible to tell from the information we've had.
Yes, we've probably all read what He's said about Fan and Raees, but this, from the interview above, 'I want to do a film that has an intense story and not too much glitz and glamour' implies that they are not small, intimate films. I'm very curious and very excited about them, but am delighted to hear he's considering something even 'smaller'. I want to see him act in every possible scenario!:D

....... let's face it - sometimes he says one thing, sometimes another. He likes to keep us guessing!
    Mara and rubyroo thank this.

They might not be very small budget but from what's know about them, they're films in line with CDI, Swades & MNIK. They're definitely not big commercial films like HNY and CE.

Anyways, commercial or offbeat, what matters is whether the film is good or not.

i'm almost 100% that the R Shetty movie will be opposite Kajol cuz he accidentally let that slip in an interview and quickly tried to cover it up :biggrin1: i posted that in the respective thread. so since i like the two together chalo.. i'll give Shetty a second chance. considering how much i dislike CE that's a big deal lol

I thought this was the case. Thanks for these quotes. I always just want him to do what makes him happy, and I enjoy just about any movie if he's in it, but it would be wonderful to see him do a truly fine, artistic, challenging movie once again. Like we know he is so capable of.
    Mara says thanks.
