Slumdog kid to play junior SRK

At least one child prodigy has been spared the trauma of underage overexposure.Tanay Cheda, who plays the protagonist Jamal’s childhood avatar in Slumdog Millionaire, has had his share of fame and recognition, at least for now.

He wants to concentrate on his studies and focus on just that one film.“And that’s Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. I play the childhood portions of Shah Rukh Khan’s role. It’s a small role and a very important film. And it will be shot during my holidays. Except My Name Is Khan my parents have decided to let me concentrate on my studies.”

Tanay is shifting from his current school Campion in Colaba to the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra and is geared for a new life in a new school.

He completely dismisses stories of replacing Darsheel Safary in Anil Monga’s film Padduram. “I don’t know where that came from. I haven’t said yes to any such film,” protests Tanay.Tanay, who played Darsheel Safari’s best friend in Taare Zameen Par, got the role of the younger Jamal in Slumdog Millionaire by chance.

“I couldn’t go to the auditions. But eight months later they came to my school for auditions. Luckily by chance I got the role. They had to work a lot on my physical appearance to make me look compatible with Ayush who played the youngest Jamal. They straightened my curly hair, etc. Also, they had to darken all of us three who played Jamal (Ayush, Tanay and Dev Patel) to look like we were constantly exposed to the sun. My makeup used to take 90 minutes every day.”

And he will now be playing the role of the junior Shah Rukh Khan in Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, a decision Karan took after watching Slumdog Millionaire (SM),” says the 12-year son of a business family whose life has transformed almost overnight.
“My family and friends are very proud of me. It feels really good. For my friends I’m still the same Tanay.”

“I’m a movie freak. When I walked the red carpet I could recognize everyone who walked by,” says Tanay. He has to sit for his elocution exams at Trinity College at London. “But coping with the studies is no problem. All my teachers have been very co-operative. Half of Slumdog was shot during my vacations.”

Surprisingly, Tanay says acting is a hobby. “Right now I just want to enjoy my childhood. I’m passionate about football. And I love to write. I’ve lots of stories to tell. As far as movies are concerned my next release is Mastang Mama where Ruslaan Mumtaz and I play mama-bhanja. I know another Slumdog may not happen. But like my dialogue in the film goes, it’s all about destiny.”

Tanay misses the Slumdog team. “But we keep meeting for pemieres and awards functions. And we all keep in touch through the email. We were all one big family.”

wonder why they need the movie to start from childhood? or maybe he's remembering his childhood? :confused2:

That's one possibility, the other one is, that they start the film by showing what kind of problems he has had in his childhood, because of Asperger's Syndrome and how those same problems continue in his adulthood...

I agree with you. It's a good choice.

@Pompula you're so right. Think it's important to show it coz the same problems which continue in his adulthood...

No more films after ‘My Name Is Khan’: ‘Slumdog’ kid

Mumbai, April 11 (IANS) After playing the ‘middle’ Jamal in “Slumdog Millionaire”, Tanay Cheda is set to star in “My Name Is Khan” in which his grownup version will be essayed by no less than Shah Rukh Khan.

But the 12-year-old boy who belongs to a business family is quite clear about one thing - he is not signing any more films as he wants to concentrate on studies.

“In Karan Johar’s ‘My Name Is Khan’, I play the childhood portions of Shah Rukh Khan’s role. It’s a small role and a very important film. And it will be shot during my holidays,” Cheda told IANS.

“Except ‘My Name Is Khan’, my parents have decided to let me concentrate on my studies.” The young star feels he has had his share of fame and recognition, so after completing the film he won’t sign any more.

Tanay, who is shifting from his current school Campion in Colaba to the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra, has to sit for his elocution exams at Trinity College in London.

“But coping with studies is no problem. All my teachers have been very cooperative. Half of ‘Slumdog…’ was shot during my vacations,” Tanay told IANS.

He played Darsheel Safari’s best friend in “Taare Zameen Par” and says Karan Johar decided to cast him as young Shah Rukh after watching the Oscar winning rags-to-riches drama.

He also added that he got the role of younger Jamal in “Slumdog Millionaire” by chance.

“I couldn’t go to the auditions. But eight months later they came to my school for auditions. By chance I got the role. They had to work a lot on my physical appearance to make me look compatible with Ayush, who played the youngest Jamal.

“They straightened my curly hair, etc. Also they had to darken all three who played Jamal (Ayush, Tanay and Dev Patel) to look like we were constantly exposed to the sun. My makeup used to take 90 minutes every day,” he said.

“Slumdog Millionaire” got critical acclaim and triumphed at all international festival, including the Oscars where it bagged eight golden statuettes.

“My family and friends are very proud of me. It feels really good. For my friends, I’m still the same Tanay,” he said.

He is also very thrilled by his visit to the Oscars ceremony. “I’m a movie freak. When I walked the red carpet I could recognize everyone who walked by,” he added.

Tanay says acting is a hobby.

“Right now I just want to enjoy my childhood. I’m passionate about football. And I love to write. I’ve lots of stories to tell. As far as movies are concerned, my next release is ‘Mustang Mama’ where Ruslaan Mumtaz and I play mama-bhanja. I know another ‘Slumdog…’ may not happen. But like my dialogue in the film goes, it’s all about destiny.”

Thats very true Katja...somehow I think this might be SRKs idea of putting the childhood in. I know that SRK writes notes and notes about his character and even includes the character's childhood. Therefore, this may have been SRKs idea, but it is obvious that it is a decision that has just been made. Usually casting is sorted out long before. Maybe I am wrong this time...it could be karan's idea!

I think SRK-Karan might be playing on an entirely opposite idea. It might show SRK to be the fun loving vivacious, popular kid in his childhood, but as his symptoms start to grow prominent, his innocence dies inside of him, creating a more restrained and matured character who rejects the very foundation of society.

Infact, the search for humanity might blend with the search of the one innocence of his childhood, creating a journey that uses the very fabric of society to reject conventional myths and bring out a man, mature in sensibilities but a loving innocent child at heart.

But thats just my concept of the story, lets see how it plays out:D
