Jab Tak Hai Jaan' among top ten at US box office

    PTI | Nov 20, 2012, 17:33PM IST
Legendary Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra's last film 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' (Till My Last Breath) has made a rare entry into the top ten of the US box office, grabbing the eighth spot among other Hollywood bigwigs.

As 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2' topped the chart with a gross of USD 141.1 million in the US and Canada, Bond film 'Skyfall' moved to number two in its second week earning USD 41.1 million, according to New York Times.

But more eye-catching was the entry of 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan', the three-hour extravaganza made by the "king of romance" Chopra, before he died last month.

The movie entered the top 10 at number 8, taking USD 1.3 million at the box office, a rare appearance for a Bollywood film in box office rankings usually dominated by Hollywood productions.

The Hindi cinema legend, hailed for directing and producing some of India's most-loved movies over several decades, died last month aged 80 after being admitted to hospital with dengue fever.

The film has grossed a total of USD 7.58 million overseas, being the highest opening Bollywood film ever in countries like the US, UK, Australia and the Middle East, said a statement from its producers Yash Raj Films.

'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' is now rubbing shoulders with Hollywood bigwigs like Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln', which had USD 21 million in ticket sales, securing the third place in the US box office.

"Wreck-It Ralph," the animated Disney film about a video game villain with dreams of becoming a hero, earned USD 18.6 million for fourth place.
Fifth went to the movie "Flight," a star vehicle for Denzel Washington, who plays a crash-landing pilot with substance abuse problems. It pulled in USD 8.8 million.

    thanks for informing Bijal.

i dont like it when people compare movie's BO collections penny by penny. it kinda takes away the fun of watching a film. why is a large part of today's hindi cinema audience more interested in counting and arguing about how much money a movie earned rather than the content of the film. why? are they going to get a share of it? idiots
and comparing movies of different genres is completely stupid IMO.
RizwanaShahrukh and Prerna Dewan thank this.

I don't get the comparison either but it is all inevitable I guess. The media needs headlines and things like these make for good headlines. As a fan I'm just glad to see Shahrukh doing a variety of roles. There are many who get stuck in a certain formula once they know it is working and if Shahrukh was in that category then I'm not sure I would enjoy those roles all much as it would get beyond repetative. He is great at doing romantic roles but it is so good to see him always taking risks. Whether it was then in the beginning of his career or it is now with movies like Swades , MNIK,Ra.One and even JTHJ . Every other movie these days is a action comedy or something on those lines and I'm so glad he went back to doing a romantic movie :)

    • Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture with Shahrukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif has created frenzy worldwide. After shattering box-office records in several parts of the world, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” has earned a million pounds in the U.K, accordingto a tweet made by trade analyst Taran Adarsh on Nov. 21, 2012.
The magic and the mania of Shahrukh Khan continue. Although, the Badshah has been ruling the Bollywood industry for over two decades, he continues to draw audiences to the theaters. Fans just can’t have enough of this man, who turned 47 on November 2, 2012.
Hence, it was expected that “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” will be a huge draw in the international box-office.
In U.K., after the Tuesday earnings of £ 54,492 were compiled, it was reported that the movie had crossed the £ 1 million mark in mere eight days. In the U.S., "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" was among the top 10 movies for the weekend of Nov. 16 to Nov. 18.
Even in the local market, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” is slowly inching towards the coveted 100-crore club. After adding the Tuesday earnings to the potluck, the total earnings stand to be Rs. 90.75 crore in eight days.
Until Aamir Khan’s “Talaash” hits the screens on Nov. 30, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” has a good chance to call its shots.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan: Shahrukh reveals his kids' reaction over his kiss with Katrina!

Mumbai: Superstar Shahrukh Khan's kiss with Katrina Kaif in the movie Jab Tak Hai Jaan had created extreme stir, since it was the former's first onscreen lip lock with his heroine. SRK had smooched Katrina quite a few times in the movie, that finally broke the former's ‘no-kiss-on-the-lips' clause for the first time.
A leading daily informed that during a recent event, Shahrukh Khan was enquired by the media, as in, what was his children Aryan and Suhana's reaction's after watching their father smooching for the first time onscreen.
As a reply to this, Khan said that he's an actor and he did so as a part of his bussiness. And, as far as his kids are concerned, they are pretty cool with it as they know it well that it's a part of their dad's profession. Well SRK, you really have a very sweet and understanding family.

Trade Analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "2012 is significant year for YRF. #EkThaTiger *Worldwide biz* Rs 258.93 cr + #JTHJ *Worldwide biz* 150.41 cr [still counting] = Rs 409.34 cr."
      "#JTHJ in a nutshell [10 days]: USA 14.03 cr..UK 9.77 cr..UAE + GCC 15.54 cr…Australia 3.29 cr. OVERSEAS TOTAL: Rs 51.74 cr," added Adarsh.
The movie which was released in 2,500+ screens in India on Nov. 13 was supposed to be released in many more theatres, but since Ajay Devgn's "Son Of Sardar" was also released on the same day with 2,000+screens, the makers of the movie were unable to get more screens.
The movie was expected to very well over the weekend. But the death of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray took a toll on its collection.

They had been engrossed in media warfare to ensure maximum eyeballs for their respective Diwali release. But little did Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn know what destiny had in store.

Despite releasing on a Tuesday, the beginning of a long festive week, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar did not really get off to a flying start. The very next day, the films were dealt a blow after news of Shiv Sena Supremo Balasaheb Thackeray’s critical health started filtering out of his Bandra East residence, Matoshree. When he passed away on Saturday afternoon, the city came to a standstill with theatres pulling down the shutters. The Diwali releases had approximately lost out on a net collection of Rs 16 crore by then.

Reportedly, theatres in Mumbai and other towns in Maharashtra - Pune, Nasik, Solapur, Sangli, Kolhapur, Satara, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola and Jalgaon cancelled movie shows adding to the films’ losses.

Over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) the loss ratio for JTHJ and SOS was estimated to be 7:9. In fact, according to leading distributor Ramesh Sippy the two films put together have lost out on Rs 12 crore.

This was further endorsed by trade expert Taran Adarsh. However, another leading distributor Devendra Shah said, “I think Rs 12 crore is an understatement. The two films must have easily suffered to the tune of Rs 16-18 crore.”

Explaining his take, Shah added, “Many did not get to see the films on Tuesday or Wednesday owing to Diwali celebrations. People had planned to watch JTHJ or SOS over the weekend.”An insider from the Son Of Sardaar team confirmed that the film has lost out on Rs 7 crore.

Owner of the leading single screen chain Gaiety-Galaxy, Manoj Desai told us, "We would surely have had 100 per cent occupancy on Saturday and Sunday. But honestly, I wouldn't like to talk about the losses the films have suffered. We closed the theatres as a mark of respect to Balasaheb." Anand Vishal, Head Of Operations at Fun Republic shared similar sentiment.

As far as exhibitors are concerned, Girish Wankhede of Cinemax India, was more forthcoming. "We had to cancel eight shows in 66 screens in Maharashtra. We expected occupancy of 55-60 per cent over the weekend, hence I would say that we lost out on a collection of nearly Rs 2 crore, which if we share 50 per cent with the distributor, implies we registered a dip of Rs 1 crore,” he said.

At the time of going to press, theatres across Maharashtra were in a dilemma if they would function on Monday. Wankhede from Cinemax confirmed, "We shall take stock of the situation around midnight.

We have been inundated with calls asking for a refund. We shall return the ticket amount for the shows, which we were unable to screen. It's a very tricky situation. Nobody must have thought that two such big films will be stopped in their tracks.”

Wafa, mumbiene and Tash thank this.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan crosses Rs 100 crore mark at Indian Box Office

    Gallery: Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Last week's Hindi release Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in leads, has continued to keep the bells ringing at the Box Office in India in the second week too. The Yash Chopra directed movie has surpassed Rs 100 crore mark at the domestic collection centres on the 11th day.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan had collected Rs 98.41 crores nett at the domestic Box Office in the 10-day-extended first week. Since there were no big Hindi releases this weekend, the Shahrukh-Katrina-Anushka starrer was expected to do rocking business in the second week. But the movie showed 80% dip in its business on the second Friday, when compared to its first day collection.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan raked in Rs 2.75 crores nett at the desi Box Office, taking its 11-day total to Rs 101.16 crores nett. Many trade experts are surprised to hear the amount of decrease in its collection. Some say that its business was affected by Telugu movies Damarukam and Routine Love Story and Kannada movie Drama in the South India. Much talked about English movie Life of Pi, which released in India on 23, also took a toll on its collection.
However, the year 2012 has witnessed several Bollywood movies crossing Rs 100 crore mark at domestic Box Office. Among them, Ek Tha Tiger has become the fastest 100 crore grosser with its collection surpassing this mark in just five days. Now, Jab Tak Hai Jaan has become the second fastest 100 crore grosser in the year.

'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' is a blockbuster overseas, becomes the fourth biggest grosser
    • Shahrukh Khan
    • November 29, 2012
    • While Shahrukh Khan, the star of “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” has moved on to fresh opportunities, the fans and the media are still upbeat about the numbers and the business the movie did. Hence, it’s a moment for SRK fans to rejoice as Boxoffice India reports on Nov. 28, 2012 that “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” is a huge blockbuster overseas. At home, the movie continues to hold its steady revenue.
According to Box office India, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” becomes the fourth highest grossing film ever in 13 days by grossing $11 million approximately.
With that, it surpasses films like “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna”, “Om Shanti Om” and much to the relief of ardent fans, Salman’s “Ek Tha Tiger.” The films that exceed in revenues are Aamir Khan’s “Three Idiots” and Shahrukh’s “My Name Is Khan” and “Don 2.”
The approximate available 13-day figures from major markets are as follows:
      · United Kingdom - £1,350,000
      · North America - $3,050,000
      · UAE - $3,200,000
      · Australia - $650,000
In domestic circuits, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” continues to hold steady ground, earning 116.29 crore net, until last numbers were reported on Wednesday, Nov. 28, as per trade analyst, Taran Adarsh.
Keeping in mind, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan’s” cost and expense, it’s going to be huge money spinner for YRF, irrespective of how the film fares at the Indian box-office, reports Indicine.
"Jab Tak Hai Jaan" has been made on a budget of Rs 60 crores, including print and marketing costs. The budget does not include Shahrukh Khan‘s acting remuneration, instead, he will get a share of the profits.

‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ Becomes Shahrukh Khan’s 2nd Biggest Box Office Hit Overseas
Shahrukh Khan's huge fan base abroad is one of the main reasons for his latest film "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" to have scored well at the overseas box office.
The film was released on Nov 13 across 600 screens in the overseas market. Directed by late Yash Chopra, it had a good opening there.
The romantic film, which also stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, has done amazing business at the overseas box office. The film global collection till third week now stands at ₹67.75 crore ($12.37 million).
"Jab Tak Hai Jaan" has now become Bollywood's third highest and Shahrukh's second highest grosser film overseas. Aamir Khan's 2009 movie "3 Idiots" is still ruling the chart with ₹123 crores ($25 million) followed by Shahrukh's 2010 movie "My Name is Khan" with ₹115 crores ($23 million).
"JTHJ" now stands third with ₹67.75 crore ($12.37 million), while Salman Khan's "Ek Tha Tiger" is pushed to the sixth spot with ₹61 crores ($10.75 million).
The romantic drama has also crossed lifetime business of films like "Don 2", "Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna", "Ek Tha Tiger", "Om Shanti Om", "Ra.One", "Dhoom 2" and "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" in the international market, according to Koimoi.com.
Among the top ten Bollywood's Highest Overseas Grosser, seven films feature Shahrukh.
The movie was also doing well at on the domestic front until the release of Aamir's "Talaash". The movie's collections had reduced considerably due to the falling number of screen counts.
Meanwhile, take a look at Bollywood's top ten highest grosser films in the overseas markets:
    Collection in USD
    3 Idiots
    My Name Is Khan
    Jab Tak Hai Jaan

'Jab Tak Hai Jaan' Box Office Collection: Shahrukh Khan Starrer Fails to Surpass Rs. 200 Cr Mark

Shahrukh Khan starrer romantic movie "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" which was touted as the biggest blockbuster film has failed to cross the Rs. 200 crore milestone worldwide.
After crossing the Rs 100 crore mark at box offices worldwide within 7 days of its release, the movie was expected to surpass the Rs 200 crore figure but failed to achieve it.
Directed by the late legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" was released during the six-day Diwali weekend across 2,500 screens in India and 600 screens internationally.
In its first week, "Jab Tak Hai Jaan" collected Rs. 150.41 crore from both domestic as well as overseas box offices and looking at the first week figure trade, analysts expected the film to cross Rs. 200 crore by the third week.
But with each passing day, the business of "JTHJ" declined at the box offices. In its second week, the film collected Rs. 179.19 crore net, worldwide. The collection further declined in the third week due to the release of Aamir Khan starrer suspense thriller "Talaash."
It raked in Rs 190.71 crore net in its third week both in India as well as in the international market. "JTHJ," also starring Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, now requires Rs. 9.29 crore to surpass the Rs. 200 crore mark and join the list with Salman Khan's "Ek Tha Tiger" and Aamir Khan's "3 Idiots."
But it's very difficult for the movie to earn Rs. 9.29 crore in its fourth week because of less number of screens and new releases. Akshay Kumar's action masala film "Khiladi 786" released this week.
With "Talaash" and "Khiladi 786," the screen counts of "JTHJ" across India and also in the overseas market has declined affecting the business.
"Jab Tak Hai Jaan," produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films banner, marked the comeback of legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra to direction after a gap of eight years.
    Tash and Vegainko thank this.
