Oh wow, are they out of their mind? It is a coincidence that My Name Is Khan deals with this kind of issue because the film is based on a true story. This same thing that happened to Shahrukh has happened to many Muslim people and others too. But in Shahrukh's case, it was totally unnecessary because he is a famous person...

In my opinion, this case is more related to religion OR race.

Film industry outraged over treatment meted out to Shahrukh

Mumbai: 'Shocking', 'disgraceful' and 'madness' is how Bollywood today reacted to the detention of Indian cinema icon Shahrukh Khan at a US airport, apparently because of his surname.

His close friends Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Juhi Chawla and Aziz Mirza as well as industry veterans like Mahesh Bhatt and Raza Murad slammed the the ill-treatment meted out to the megastar.

"Shocked and upset... feeling terrible for Shah Rukh...," Johar, a well-known film director, wrote on his twitter page while Juhi said the detention was "as absurd as Brad Pitt coming to India, being strip-searched, investigated and interrogated".

Choreographer-turned director Farah Khan, one of his closest friends, asked, "if he can be discriminated (on the basis of religion), who else is left. Shahrukh was on Time Magazine among its 50 Most Influential People. It is not only discrimination but lack of knowledge also."

Filmmaker Bhatt said, "it is shocking that Shahrukh Khan, who is by every definition a global icon, should be subjected to something like that".

Actress Priyanka Chopra, who had worked with Shahrukh in 'Don', termed the incident as "disgraceful".

"Shocking, disturbing and downright disgraceful. Its such behaviour that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for Gods sake. GET REAL!!," an angry Chopra wrote on her Twitter page.

I can't see these articles gaining much precedence. After all the release is 5-6 months away. I think people will be quick to realise that's a little too far away to be using this kind of 'publicity'. Now of course, if it had been a month beforehand, then all hell would well and truly have broken out.

Besides, the general feeling amongst the media is one of genuine outrage and I can't see anyone putting forward this vewipoint getting far. It's a bit like when that 'religious' comment of SR's was misconstrued. It was so obvious to one and all that SR would never be disrespectful to Mohammed that in the end the case was dropped.

Also, as Pri pointed out, SR DOES NOT NEED publicity. As SR would say, HE IS PUBLICITY. End of story!

Ironically, he was insulted in US on India's Independence Day when he was in US to attend a function on the occasion.

The insult was triggered due to his Muslim surname 'Khan'.

He kept telling the airport authorities that he was a celebrity, still the questioning continued. It was only after the Indian embassy intervened and vouched for him that he was released.

He was humiliated for being a Muslim was clear from the fact that his secretary who bore a Hindu name was allowed to go.

An angry Shah Rukh Khan said he felt humiliated by the Americans.

Reacting to SRK"s detention,, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni said that too many reports of frisking coming from US.

This is not the first time that SRK has gone to the US, but the latest insult has come as a big shock to millions of SRK fans.

This has again brought to the fore America's 9/11 hangover when a Muslim name sparks suspicion.

Shah Rukh Khan is in America for the South Asian Carnival to celebrate Independence Day.

This special Meet-and-Greet with Bollywoods big stars has been organised as an Independence Day treat for Indian fans in the US on Saturday in Chicago and on Sunday in Houston

just to echo chris cup's sentiment here.. shah doesnt need an incident like this to publicize his movie.. when he breathes.. it's publicity...all these haters need to get a life... im sure they would not have said the same thing if it happened to their favorite actor/actress.

and i was so distressed when i heard his cnn ibn interview. he sounded so shaken up and very scared.. and when he started to talk abt the actual meaning of independence and his faith in God.. it just reinforces what he's been saying all this time.. tht he's jsut a regular guy..

this incident is jsut sooo ridiculous ... and soooo unnecessary.. it's disgraceful.. :tsk:

Bollywood Star Detained at U.S. Airport

    Associated Press

NEW DELHI -- Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was detained for two hours for questioning at a U.S. airport before being released by immigration authorities, a news agency report said Saturday.

Mr. Khan, one of the Indian film industry's biggest stars, said he was detained because his name came up on a computer alert list at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey, Press Trust of India news agency said.

"I told them I am a movie star," Mr. Khan was quoted as saying.

The reported detention made top news on TV stations in India.

Mr. Khan said he was able to message a lawmaker in India who asked the Indian embassy in Washington to seek his release. Mr. Khan was let go after embassy officials intervened, the agency said.

In New Delhi, U.S. Ambassador to India, Timothy J. Roemer, said the U.S. Embassy was trying to "ascertain the facts of the case to understand what took place."

"Shah Rukh Khan, the actor and global icon, is a very welcome guest in the United States. Many Americans love his films," Mr. Roemer said Saturday through an embassy spokesman.

Mr. Khan, 44, has acted in more than 70 films, and has consistently topped popularity rankings in India for the past several years. He is in the United States to promote his new film, "My Name Is Khan."

Shah Rukh’s detention has Bollywood shocked, disgusted

    August 15th, 2009 - 6:03 pm ICT by IANS

New Delhi, Aug 15 (IANS) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s two-hour detention at Newark airport in the US over his surname had members of the Indian film industry fuming. Karan Johar was “shocked”, actress Priyanka said it was “downright disgraceful” and filmmaker Kabir Khan termed it “harassment”.

The 43-year-old actor was detained while he was on his way to Chicago to attend an event related to India’s Independence Day and was freed only after Indian diplomats intervened.

Here’s what King Khan’s friends and colleagues had to say:

Karan Johar: I am shocked and upset…feeling terrible for Shah Rukh.

Priyanka Chopra: Shocking, disturbing and downright disgraceful. It’s such behaviour that fuels hatred and racism. Shah Rukh Khan is a world figure for god’s sake. Get real!

Kabir Khan: When I heard this news, I was so surprised…it has almost become a routine…if you have a Muslim name you are bound to be questioned. It happened with me thrice in the US… I was stopped by immigration officials for three to five hours… they don’t care whether you are a celebrity or whoever.

But when it comes to Shah Rukh, it doesn’t take more than 20 seconds to figure out who he is…. Any search engine (on the Internet) will give more information on him than Hollywood stars Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt and despite that if it took them two hours to figure out, then its harassment.

Post 9/11 it is prejudice to have a person’s name and religion checked and it is very discouraging as well.

Pritish Nandy: This is the problem with law enforcers worldwide…Truly obnoxious. Cops don’t want to recognise anybody. They love to show their power and authority, especially in the US.

Kunal Kohli: It’s really disgusting. Even if they had done a Google search on their mobiles, they would have seen who he is. What were they checking for two hours on their super computers? To detain him for two hours is ridiculous, disgusting and an insult to us Indians.

Arindam Chaudhari: Shah Rukh has just finished his film “My Name Is Khan” in which his character tries to prove to the Americans that he is not a terrorist. I’m sure he never thought it would happen in real life too…What a shame! It’s shocking and shameful because I am sure Shah Rukh would have had to explain who he is.

It’s Shah Rukh so it’s become big news. But there many who constantly go through this everyday. It’s really sad.

Eesha Koppikhar: I am not sure of the exact events but if he was detained just because he is a Muslim with Khan as a last name, it is very wrong.

even Karan said that someone masseged him asking is this done by him in order to grab the publicity. He also said that he can't believe people can even think something like that and he doesn't want to comment on this type of nonsence. He talks to NDTV few min ago and also said he feel bad about the fact that shahrukh was alone at that time.

Thank you Bridget. I'm glad this is making news in America also. Hopefully the whole incident can be used to bring about change NOT just for Shah Rukh but for all people who happen to be Muslim or have a 'certain' name.

I'm beginning to think that for once Shah won't be searched at the airport tomorrow morning. Instead he might be given an official police escort. I would really like to see that 'difficult' immigration officer's face then.

BTW, the thought came to me that b/c SR has official ties with Malaysia might be one of the reasons for his detention. Just a thought. After all it was only 2 weeks ago he had dinner with the PM of Malaysia. :suspicious: Who knows what madness was going through those officials minds.

Bollywood livid over treatment meted out to Shahrukh

    Business Standard

    / Mumbai August 15, 2009, 16:30 IST

'Shocking', 'disgraceful' and 'madness' is how Bollywood today reacted to the detention of Indian cinema icon Shahrukh Khan at a US airport, apparently because of his surname.

Shocking, disturbing and downright disgraceful. Its such behaviour that fuels hatred and racism. SRK's a world figure for Gods sake. GET REAL!!," an angry Chopra wrote on her Twitter page.

Khan, one of the most prominent faces of Bollywood on the global stage, was on his way to attend an Independence Day celebration function in Chicago when he was detained and questioned for two hours at Nerwark Airport.

His detention is not the isolated case for Indian film industry. Malayalam superstar Mammootty too was detained at the JFK airport recently because of his middle name 'Ismail'.

Irrfan Khan, who faced a similar problem last year in US despite his global fame following the success of 'Slumdog Millionaire', said, "we should point out loopholes in their airport security system".

The other film personalities subjected to such treatment include 'New York' director Kabir Khan and Neil Nitin Mukesh. Kabir had alleged that he had to go through the security drill thrice despite being cleared the first time.

Kabir, who made a movie on the paranoia towards Asians in the post 9/11 US society, said it is a clear case of fear psychosis. "Shah Rukh just happens to be a superstar so we took notice of it. It is happening everyday.

"You just type his name on google and you get more hits than Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise combined. There is a clear element of arrogance in the entire episode," he said. Filmmaker Aziz Mirza, who directed Shahrukh first in TV serial 'Circus' in 1980s and hit movies like 'Yes Boss' and 'Chalte Chalte', felt that whatever the US authorities had done was "sheer madness"."Shah Rukh is a big star. Everyone knows him everywhere. The security officer might have done it out of his personal agenda and he might have done it in the garb of law," Mirza said.

Veteran actor Raza Murad said that the incident was a clear case of "racial discrimination".

"This is clearly a case of racial discrimination. They are going out of their way to humiliate Indians and if they come to know a passenger is Muslim, they try to discourage him from visiting the US," Murad said.

"Shah Rukh has shot several films in the US. If they had any doubt about his identity, they could have surfed the Internet where there are over five lakh images and references about him," Murad added.
