Filmmakers, Sajid Nadiadwala and Vishal Bhardwaj, along with Shah Rukh Khan, have not only decided to take the movie adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel 2 States to international cinemas but they are also venturing forward, sans Bhagat, who was initially asked to script the movie.

The move to go global marks the first international bi-lingual film in SRK’s career. As our source tells us, “For Shah Rukh, as well as his director Vishal Bhardwaj and producer Sajid Nadiadwala, 2 States will be a chance to crack the international market.

Not that Shah Rukh is looking to give Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell a run for their money but he feels that Chetan Bhagat’s novel has the potential to appeal to NRI audiences.”

Having taken the decision to script the movie in Hindi and English, the filmmakers were in search of an Indian writer, with an international cinematic sensibility.

Finally, in a closed door meeting last week, they brought on board the writer of Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding (2001), Sabrina Dhawan, to co-write 2 States with Bhardwaj.

When contacted, Nadiadwala confirms, “Yes, we’re looking at 2 States as a project with a much wider reach than our other films, as it has the potential to break through boundaries. We’ve got Sabrina Dhawan on board to write the screen adaptation.

Sabrina and Vishal are now in Delhi working on the script. We’ll finalize the casting after the script is done. It should take about a month as we’re going on floors in July.”

Bhagat, who tried to conceal his obliviousness about the latest turn of events, tells us, “I have not been in the loop so I don’t know what the progress is. I’m busy with my next book. If things are moving along with 2 States that’s great.”
